Blah, Blah, Blog: Summer Pickles

I think about this cancer all the time. Sometimes I wish I had an answer as to why I got this cancer. I know I didn't cause the cancer. All the good psychotherapists tell you, you didnt cause this to happen." Nobody is that good, they say. And yet, what could I have done differently? That is a really slippery slope. I wont go there. I dont go there. Honestly, though, I go there. What should I have done? Theres a lot riding on this. My husband, my daughter, my son....I dont know if I would change the experiences of this last year. Certainly, I would change the cancer to something more exotic, more curable. But I have learned more about myself, more about my family and my friends, I have learned that I am surrounded by wonderful people, people that have helped me and my family and shown me true, true love. It has been a humbling and glorious experience. I am a blessed and lucky woman. I choose to view this as a journey, as a chance to make changes in my life. I am so thankful. I almost died last year. Sometimes that reality comes into focus and I think, "I have today!" I am thankful for each day. I still get mad at my kids and impatient with the dogs. I forgot Tuesdays are trash and Wednesday recycling. Laundry piles up, bills need to be paid, errands to be run and the dishwasher emptied. But those are the days I get, days I might have missed. So the frustrations of my life before cancer are vague memories. The frustrations of life today are just that, frustrations that happen and are gone. I dont hold on to anything negative anymore. That is the optimist in me. I choose to hold on to the positive things that happen, and if they happen to be negative, I do my damndest to make them positive - and I am usually successful.I feel an increasing sense of peace regarding my diagnosis and my future - mostly because I dont know what that future holds! We are born and we die, we dont get a choice in either. I feel prepared for whatever happens because I have had such a wonderful life until this day.At our house we say, It is what it is, we can't change yesterday, we don't know what tomorrow will bring, so we have today. I say that to myself every morning and every morning I choose to live. I know is may seem simplistic or maybe too goody, goody, but I just dont want to live any other way. I just dont want to waste any of my days being depressed or sad. I hope for many more years, but I will just take what I get, what each day brings me.The reason for all these musings is that I woke up today, took the dogs for our walk, and saw the beauty of the day, felt the warmth of the sun and realized, I am O.K., I am O.K. Gold and silver prices gain 1% and 3% respectively in July 2008Bullion metal prices registered modest gains today, Thursday, 31 July, 2008 after a pack of economic data on the Wall Street disappointed and also after the dollar lost ground against some of its major currencies. On the other hand, a lower dollar pushes up precious metal prices as their demand lessens as it becomes cheaper for traders holding other currencies.Comex Gold for August delivery rose 0.4 (1.1%) to close at 22.7 ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. But prices have dropped since then.This year, gold prices have gained 9.9% till date against a 8.4% drop for the dollar against the euro. Gold prices ended June, 2008 with a gain of 4.1%. Before May, for April, prices closed lower by 6.3%.For first quarter prices gained 10.7%. In January, prices gained 11%, the highest monthly gain since April 2006. For the second quarter, it had gained a paltry 1.4%.Silver prices ended the month of May 2008 with a gain of 2.7%. On the other hand, after keeping interest rates unchanged at 4% since June, 2007, ECB hiked the same to 4.25% in June, 2008.Gold had witnessed the greatest annual gain in twenty eight years by gaining 00/ounce (31%) in FY 2007 as lower interest rates had sent the dollar tumbling, and crude-oil prices rose to a record. In 2006, silver had jumped 46% while gold gained 23%.At the MCX, gold prices for August delivery closed higher by Rs 141 (1.13%) at Rs 12,618 per 10 grams. Prices rose to a high of Rs 12,724 per 10 grams and fell to a low of Rs 12,470 per 10 grams during the day’s trading.At the MCX, silver prices for September delivery closed Rs 238 (0.97%) higher at Rs 24,720/Kg.

One day I was for the first time at the window to eternity. I had been told a lot of it. Parts of it I had felt intuitively. I was not so naive to think of a window like in a house. In his penultimate film, Wittgenstein, Derek Jarman attempts to grapple with the life and ideas of the brilliant, tortured philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, applying to the great man's life a framework that can only be described as the mingling of avant-garde theater with the aesthetics of a children's TV show. Primary colors abound, vibrant hues that serve to separate Wittgenstein from those around him, and the film as a whole from the historical story it purports to tell — The former is responsible for many of the film's more playful touches, and he opens the film by introducing himself, his bourgeoisie family, and the many tutors who are enlisted to teach him as a boy. The alien, who should really not exist, sets the film's tone: nothing can be assumed, an axiom that's driven home by Wittgenstein later in the film when he poses the old question about the sun going around the earth versus the earth going around the sun. It's a film, essentially, about thinking, a problem for a visual medium that Jarman solves by stripping down the surroundings and infusing the simple sets and costumes with as much color and vibrancy as he can muster. Many of Jarman's interjections into the story of Wittgenstein are puzzling in the extreme, devoid of context as the whole film is. His set and costume design frequently verge into absurd beauty, as in the scene where the economist Maynard Keynes (John Quentin), dressed in a ridiculous electric blue suit, meets with his aging ballerina wife (Lynn Seymour) whose graceful movements in a frilly blue costume turn the scene into a dance in sympathetic colors.In addition to its engagement with Wittgenstein's ideas, the film also deals with the philosopher's conflicted sexuality, which seems to have caused him as much anguish as his considerations of philosophical problems. The film's other characters seem to have less trouble with such basic problems, and in some ways the film questions the importance of philosophy at all, much as Wittgenstein did at various points in his life. Wittgenstein cannot so easily accept this, cannot tolerate aspects of the world being roped off from analysis and explication, and the film's unanswered central question is whether Wittgenstein or Keynes is right on this point.This is obviously a very complex and fascinating film, all the more so for the way in which it leaves such crucial questions unresolved. Wittgenstein's philosophy is presented in his own fumbling, often contradictory words, taking shape throughout the film as he postulates and then rejects new theories and new ways of understanding the world. As a metaphor for the strivings of philosophy, always seeking to fully understand the world and always coming up against illusions and barriers, it's a nearly perfect way to end the film.

I have been working on completely redoing all of the shapes for my store, HotBox, and in doing so I realized that different skins look good on different shapes. Depending on what skin I'm wearing when I build a shape, it might take on a completely different being than if I had used a different skin. I know that the skins I wear all the time are the skins that look the best on my personal shape. I inspect the seams, the nostrils, the ears, the knees, and the blurriness (or lack thereof) on the eye detail.I haven't always been so picky and as my avatar has evolved, so has my particular requirements for a skin in frequent rotation.My first major skin purchases was from Cake. My favorite was the Caramel Skin in Crush with Caramel Skin in Bare and Caramel Skin in Emerald as options for different outfits. Then after about 3 months, I started really seeing all the different skins and I saw someone in a skin that looked very doll-like and I asked them about it. I pretty much shelved those skins and went on a fierce hunt for the right skin for me. He took me to RAC (now Laqroki) for skins and I bought my first shape. My costume folder in my overburdened inventory is impressive, ranging from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle to Nun getups.One day I was shopping at a large retailer that provides high-quality goods in every category, and I realized that in those clothes, with that hair in this skin and this shape that I looked exactly like everyone else. I bought a ton of different skins so that I would be able to build shapes that were not just finely honed, but also had the ability to look totally different in each advertisement in my store. I thought about making a smaller shape to wear just so I could wear clothes with prims without having to adjust all of them and when my friend Marcelle Decuir gave me a copy of their shape, I wore that shape and tweaked it until I made the shape I currently have. I had just got a skin from Bazy and alot of how that skin was made went into how I made my face. I've tweaked the shape a tad here and there a smidgen with the biggest thing making the shoulders wider so that my favorite AO didn't look odd.When I saw on the feed a preview of the unreleased Tuesday skins from Blowpop, I knew that they would be right on my shape and was there the day they debuted, buying so many that the creator, Annyka Bekkers, told me that she would drop the next series on me and I was in hog heaven when she did. THE TRANSPLANTA day or two following the chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment, the transplant will occur. Allogeneic patients will receive additional medications to prevent and control graft-versus-host disease.Extraordinary precautions will be taken to minimize the patient's exposure to viruses and bacteria. Visitors and hospital personnel will wash their hands with antiseptic soap and, in some cases, wear protective gowns, gloves and/or masks while in the patient's room. Fresh fruits, vegetables, plants and cut flowers will be prohibited in the patient's room since they often carry fungi and bacteria that pose a risk of infection. When leaving the room, the patient may wear a mask, gown and gloves as a barrier against bacteria and virus, and as a reminder to others that he or she is susceptible to infection. Blood samples will be taken daily to determine whether or not engraftment has occurred and to monitor organ function. Some patients find the emotional and psychological stress more problematic than the physical discomfort.The psychological and emotional stress stems from several factors. First, patients undergoing transplants are already traumatized by the news that they have a life-threatening disease. While the transplant offers hope for their recovery, the prospect of undergoing a long, arduous medical procedure is still not pleasant and there's no guarantee of success.Second, patients undergoing a transplant can feel quite isolated. The special precautions taken to guard against infection while the immune system is impaired can leave a patient feeling detached from the rest of the world and cut off from normal human contact. The patient is housed in a private room, sometimes with special air-filtering equipment to purify the air. The number of visitors is restricted and visitors are asked to wear gloves, masks and/or other protective clothing to inhibit the spread of bacteria and virus while visiting the patient. Some also find it embarrassing to be dependent on strangers for help with basic daily functions such as using the washroom.The long weeks of waiting for the transplanted marrow to engraft, for blood counts to return to safe levels, and for side effects to disappear increase the emotional trauma. Seeing my wounded chakras was proof, and this realization helped me to cure some problems. My fourth chakra was always bright and open, and spinning at a perfect slow laze. My healing energy always flowed straight from the crown of my head, in a pristine white light that to me was always a very healthy seventh chakra (though I don't really want to claim it is perfect, because no one is perfect.)Alright, all this lead-up does have a point. I guess I'll just say this: I saw all my chakras last night, which I truly trust to gauge my mental health for sure, and my physical health often. In evaluating whether the non-custodial parent has refused to provide sufficient support, the court considers the reasonable living expenses of the parent with custody, the child's past and present expenses, and, if applicable, the amount of support the non-custodial parent has provided. Although most parties agree on child support outside of court, either party may request a hearing on child support when they cannot agree on the amount, when the parties' combined adjusted gross income is more than 00,000 per year, or when one party is armed with other facts suggesting that deviation from the Guidelines is appropriate. Absent an exception, child support terminates in North Carolina when a child reaches the age of eighteen. The two most important exceptions to this rule, for all orders entered on or after October 1, 1993, are that: 1) when a child is otherwise emancipated prior to age 18, payments terminate at that time, and 2) [i]f the child is still in primary or secondary school when the child reaches 18, support payments shall continue until the child graduates, otherwise ceases to attend school on a regular basis, fails to make satisfactory academic progress towards graduation, or reaches age 20, whichever comes first, unless the court in its discretion orders that payments cease at age 18 or prior to high school graduation. For such a child, the obligation of child support continues until the child is no longer physically or mentally incapable of supporting him- or herself. Parties may wish for example to use a separation agreement to provide for private schooling, college or post-high school education, summer camp, life insurance for the minor's benefit in the event of the death of the parent paying child support, cost of living increases, extension of support beyond the age of eighteen, and transfer of the dependency exemption. But because North Carolina law cannot require the parent paying child support to obligate him- or herself to pay for college of to purchase life insurance to secure child support payments, many parents will refuse to enter into separation agreements containing such provisions. Although child support provisions in a private contract are not directly modifiable by the court, absent the parties' consent, a court having proper jurisdiction is free at all times during the child's minority to enter an order of child support and/or to modify an existing order based on a showing of changed circumstances. The fact that child support is provided for in an agreement, then, does not mean that the court cannot order a different amount of support to be paid. If the child has increased needs, even if the parties' incomes have not changed, a judge may decide to order additional child support. If the payor's income has declined through no fault of his own, even if the child's needs have not declined, a judge may decide to reduce the amount of child support. If child support is embodied in a separation agreement, the standard for modification requires only that the moving party must show the amount of support necessary to meet the reasonable needs of the child at the time of the hearing. In general, the calculation of the secondary parent's child support obligation under Worksheet B will yield a lower child support amount than use of Worksheet A. Split custody, which uses Worksheet C, refers to families with more than one child, where at least one child lives with one parent full-time and the other child or children live with the other parent. The court may then deviate from the Guidelines if it finds by greater weight of the evidence that the application of the guidelines would not meet or would exceed the reasonable needs of the child considering the relative ability of each parent to provide support or would be otherwise unjust or inappropriate. Exceptions to this rule about imputation of income exist for those parents who are caring for a child under three years old and who owe the child a legal duty of care, as well as for those who are physically or mentally incapacitated. As noted previously, four adjustments can impact on the amount of child support owed by a parent, namely: preexisting child support obligations and responsibility for other children, payments for health insurance premiums, work-related child care costs, and extraordinary expenses for a child's medical bills, education, transportation and the like. As noted in Internal Revenue Code section 71(c), however, child support now includes amounts specifically designated as such as well as payments, which although not denominated as child support, are reduced upon the happening of a contingency relating to the child or decreased at a time clearly associated with such a contingency. For example, if payments designated as alimony will be reduced or terminated upon a contingency relating to the child (such as the child's turning 18), the Internal Revenue Service will view those portions of the alimony payments as non-taxable, non-deductible child support. More particularly, the court's conclusions of law must be based on factual findings indicating that the court took due regard of the estates, earnings, conditions, accustomed standard of living of the child and the parties, the child care and homemaker contributions of each party, and other facts of the particular case. sections 651-667, created a federal child support enforcement program which mandates that every state adopt a plan meeting certain standards for the collection of child support. Although the local DHR unit may charge you certain other costs as well as its legal fees and recover the amount out of the support payments collected, this remedy may provide needed assistance to you if you cannot afford to retain a private attorney to represent you in seeking or collecting child support payments. North Carolina has recently enacted a new statutory remedy to provide for the interstate enforcement of child support obligations, called the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act, Chapter 52C of the North Carolina General Statutes (UIFSA). In child support cases, a court retains continuing exclusive jurisdiction pursuant to UIFSA over its support order as long as that state remains the residence of the obligor, the obligee or the child, or until each party files written consent with the issuing state authorizing the court of another state to assume continuing exclusive jurisdiction in that other state. Where there may already be more than one child support order, and where the states each have exclusive jurisdiction by reason of a party's residence, then the court presiding over a UIFSA proceeding is required to recognize the support order that was issued by the court in the child's current home state. (6) the non-resident engaged in an act of sexual intercourse in North Carolina with the child's other parent, and the child may have been conceived as a result of that act;
