Animal Collective seems to hold up a mirror to the chaos and repetition in my brain, and I look back and am comforted, want to sing and dance and express myself in the way they can. Purportedly the songs that didn’t quite fit on Strawberry Jam, the EP stands incredibly well on its own. The title track is by far my favorite. The type of song they sing is familiar but their voices are slightly different from the forest you are used to. As you drift off to sleep (wake up?) during the last song you have the fleeting feeling that something very good has happened and you want to do it again. They don’t sound superimposed like some of their earlier tracks; My only criticism of Water Curses would be that the songs after the first track are too similar and seem to blend into one; the temptation is to take the whole EP as one long track. There is nothing particularly distinctive about the end of this track, but the floating-on-the-surface feel reinforces the need to settle down after “Water Curses”. is short and nice to fall asleep to because of its afterglow period, but only the first track is as compelling to me as most of the tracks on Strawberry Jam.

I suppose this post is also an attempt to start back up on the blogging routine.  So stay tuned while I try and decide how often to distract you with mundane posts and whatnot.
